Road Design – From Concept to a Safe and Durable Road

Design is the first essential step in any road infrastructure project. At this stage, engineers define all the details of the future road: from the route, slopes, and road layer structure to drainage solutions, traffic safety, and integration into the surrounding environment.

Before the first asphalt layer is laid, the Dromcons team answers the critical question: “Can a safe and efficient road be built here for the long term?” The answer is never based on intuition, but on geotechnical studies, topographic surveys, and detailed technical analyses.

For every project, Dromcons analyzes:

  • terrain characteristics and associated risks, such as landslides, settlement, and groundwater;
  • estimated traffic flows and road safety requirements;
  • how the project integrates into the existing infrastructure and surrounding environment;
  • the total life-cycle cost of the road, including design, construction, and maintenance.

Graphic and Written Documentation in Road Design

In order for a road to be built safely, complete technical documentation is required. This documentation is generally divided into two main categories: graphic documentation and written documentation.

Graphic documentation in road design

  • Site plan – shows where the road will be located, how it connects to the existing network, and how it fits into the terrain.
  • Location plan – explains how the project relates to urban planning regulations and to the surrounding environment.
  • Longitudinal profile – describes elevation changes along the route, essential for slope calculation and drainage system design.
  • Cross section – shows the road structure across its width: traffic lanes, shoulders, ditches, guardrails, and green areas.
  • Execution details – technical drawings that guide contractors so each layer and each element is executed correctly.

Written documentation in road design

  • Technical memorandum – explains to authorities and to the client why specific technical solutions were chosen and how they meet project requirements.
  • Technical specifications – clearly define the execution rules: permitted materials, working methods, quality standards, and mandatory checks.
  • Control program – defines how and when the works are checked, so any mistakes are identified and corrected in time.
  • Cost estimates by work category – provide the client with a clear picture of the required budget.
  • Permit and approval applications – the Dromcons team prepares the complete file for authorities, saving time and effort for the client.

Bridge Design – Structures Built to Last

If road design is already a complex process, bridge design goes one step further. We are talking about structures that must withstand decades of use, heavy loads, temperature changes, vibration, and severe weather conditions. That is why, in bridge projects, structural safety and durability are essential criteria.

Dromcons engineers design both large bridges for national infrastructure and smaller bridges and culverts for local authorities or private beneficiaries. For each project, clearly defined stages are followed:

  • Geotechnical studies – analyze the ground on which the bridge foundation will be placed and determine the required depth and type of foundation.
  • Structural calculations – define element dimensions, reinforcement type, materials, and the way the structure will carry loads.
  • Material selection – prestressed concrete, steel, or combinations of these, depending on the intended use, traffic flow, and budget.
  • Execution details – drawings and technical plans that guide contractors through every stage: casting, assembly, formwork, reinforcement, waterproofing.
  • Permits and approvals – the entire administrative process is handled by Dromcons to ensure compliance with all legal requirements.

Execution of Road Infrastructure Works

Dromcons does not stop at the planning phase. We are a road and bridge company that provides both design services and execution works, with specialized teams and an in-house laboratory for material testing.

In general terms, the execution of a road or bridge follows these steps:

  • Ground preparation and earthworks – clearing, leveling, compaction, and soil stabilization.
  • Laying road structure layers – foundation, ballast, asphalt mixtures, or other road surfacing systems, בהתאם to the design.
  • Bridge and culvert construction – foundations, piers, abutments, deck, waterproofing, and expansion joint cover devices.
  • Drainage and stormwater works – ditches, culverts, and discharge pipes to prevent water accumulation on the roadway.
  • Road markings and signage – horizontal and vertical markings, guardrails, signs, and direction panels.
  • Quality control – testing of materials and works in the Dromcons authorized laboratory to verify compliance with technical standards.

Case Studies: Road Infrastructure Projects

1) Road design and construction: Arad East Bypass

This project was carried out in partnership with SC PORR Construct SRL, with Arad County Council and C.N.A.I.R through D.R.D.P Timișoara as beneficiaries. The Arad East Bypass is an important step in the development of regional road infrastructure.

Dromcons provided design and technical assistance services for a road of approximately 11 km, with 7 intersections and various auxiliary works. In addition, the following were completed:

  • detailed topographic studies along the entire route;
  • obtaining the required permits and approvals;
  • a complex geotechnical study with 75 boreholes at various depths.

2) Bridge design and construction: DN14A Blăjel

Another representative project is the one on DN14A Blăjel, completed together with GEIGER Transilvania SRL. The goal of this work was to improve the local road infrastructure by building a safe and durable bridge.

The Dromcons team carried out a rigorous geotechnical study, which included:

  • medium-depth boreholes;
  • shallow-depth boreholes;
  • super-heavy dynamic penetration tests to evaluate ground resistance.

In addition to the geotechnical component, the project included detailed topographic studies and complete design and technical assistance services, ensuring precise and efficient execution.
